Lotto Soudal rider Victor Campenaerts has finished third at the Belgian national time trial championships in Gavere. The double national champion against the clock had to settle for a bronze medal after Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl teammates Yves Lampaert and Remco Evenepoel. The latter took the title, Campenaerts clocked the third time, at 1’34” from Evenepoel. Frederik Frison and Florian Vermeersch finished in fifth and sixth place. Local and designer of the course Thomas De Gendt still suffered from his ankle injury which forced him to abandon the Tour de Suisse and was not able to set a top time.

A disappointed but realistic Campenaerts reacts to his third place. “I always knew it would be difficult to beat these guys but I’ve done everything within my powers to try and there is nothing wrong with being ambitious. The time differences don’t lie so I have to settle for this third place. A special shout-out to the crowd and fans in my home town because they really were amazing. This was definitely the most fun time trial that I ever rode in my career.”
