Another podium place for the young climber Van Eetvelt.

A day after finishing third at the Trofeo Andratx, Lennert Van Eetvelt took another podium place at the Challenge Mallorca. This time, the 21-year-old Belgian finished second at the Trofeo Serra de Tramuntana after excellent teamwork by Lotto Dstny.

Due to snowfall, the originally planned race was shortened to 120 kilometres but that didn’t bother Van Eetvelt, who again impressed in one of his first racing days as a pro. The penultimate test at the Challenge Mallorca was decided in the last of two climbs of the Coll de Femenies. It was Harry Sweeny who upped the pace and only a handful riders could follow, one of which being his teammate Lennert Van Eetvelt. In a tactical and ice-cold final, Van Eetvelt again showed himself as one of the strongest guys of the bunch. The Lotto Dstny rider came in second after Kobe Goossens, who took his second consecutive victory on Mallorca after a short solo.

The young climber Van Eetvelt spoke with mixed feelings about his second place: “To finish second today after a third place yesterday is on the one hand fantastic. It is great to be able to show this so early in my career. But of course it’s also a shame that I just missed out on the victory again. At the bottom of the last time Coll de Femenies, I didn’t feel great anymore to be honest. I was really cold but my teammates really believed in me and gave me the confidence. That made the difference and thanks to the support of the team I went for it. Pascal Eenkhoorn brought me to the front and Harry Sweeny ensured a strong pace on the climb. This caused splits in the bunch, which made it a little easier to race the final but at the end it was a strong Goossens who still got away. But I am really grateful for the support of my teammates and happy that I could reward them with another podium spot.”
