Race 11 June 2024

Jarno Widar is now wearing 3 jerseys in Italy: he has been wearing the white youth jersey throughout the entire Giro Next Gen and after his victory today, he also adds the pink leader's jersey and the KOM. Widar arrived alone on the climb to Pian Della Mussa. "We played it perfectly with the team. I saw that the guys from Visma were in trouble, while Milan (Donie) and I still felt very good during the climb," says Widar. "I urged Milan to increase the pace and make the race tough."

On the last climb- the 19 kilometers long Pian Della Mussa (with an average of 5.6%)- Widar eventually went solo. "Only Wouter Toussaint (Wanty-ReUz-Technord) and Mathys Rondel (Tudor Pro Cycling Team U23) could follow. We didn't worked well together, so I decided to attack in the last kilometer and go full gas."

With success, because Widar arrived alone and, in addition to the victory, immediately took the pink jersey. At 18 years old, he is also the youngest stage winner in the past 20 years. "I can hardly believe that I can win a stage here," he says joyfully. "The Giro Next Gen is about the biggest race that exists for our category. Winning here and being able to compete for the overall classification is simply fantastic. I hope I’ll be able to enjoy the Maglia Rosa and there won’t be echelons or something in the coming flat stages. We also have very good sprinters in our team and I hope to do well again in the next mountain stages."
