What a demonstration: Jarno Widar (18) takes his second stage win in the Giro Next Gen. Widar was already firmly in pink and now gives it another boost.
Race 14 June 2024

D-Day for Jarno Widar, as the toughest stage of this Giro Next Gen was predicted to be the decisive one of the week. The sixth stage, starting in Borgo Virgilio, featured four climbs and finished on the challenging Sant'Anna di Alfaedo, a 9-kilometer ascent at 8.6 percent. It was there, in the final kilometer, that Widar, wearing pink, was able to make the difference.

"I woke up with a lot of confidence and had set my sights on this queen stage," Widar recounts. "But on the way, I felt downright awful. I didn't panic and fortunately, I felt myself getting better as the final climb approached. It was still tough to follow Mathys Rondel (Tudor Pro Cycling Team U23). When Pablo Torres (UAE Team Emirates Gen Z) made his move, I had to go with him. At 250 meters from the finish, I took my chance."

Widar eventually finished with a substantial lead, securing his position even more firmly in pink. He now has a 52-second lead over Spaniard Torres and Frenchman Rondel. "I'm really happy, this is what you dream of as a little boy. The Giro Next Gen is the biggest race in our category. Can I keep the pink jersey until Sunday? If everything stays safe and I don't have an off day, then maybe, yes."
