Development Milestone in Belgian cycling: Jarno Widar takes home the Giro Next Gen

Lotto Dstny makes history: Jarno Widar has become the first Belgian ever to win the Giro Next Gen and can take the Maglia Rosa home.
Race 16 June 2024

Jarno Widar, already good for two stage wins earlier this week, started the final stage in Forlimpopoli with a 52-second lead. The pink jersey was already firmly on his shoulders, and hard work from the team today kept it that way. Widar thus becomes the first Belgian ever to stand on the podium of the Giro Next Gen, the Giro for U23. At 18 years old, the young climbing talent is also the youngest winner in 20 years.

"The feeling I have right now is incredible. With three laps to go today, we were suddenly more than a minute and a half behind the breakaway riders, and I started to stress a bit. But the team worked incredibly hard again. That has been the case all week. Actually, this victory is 99 percent their work and only 1 percent mine. Not once was I afraid of losing the pink jersey. I have always believed in them and in myself."

The Lotto Dstny Development Team has had a wonderful week in Italy. Widar not only took the Maglia Rosa but also claimed two stages, at Sant’Anna di Alfaedo and Ala di Stura. He can also take the young rider's jersey home. Steffen De Schuyteneer added a third victory to Lotto Dstny's list this week by sprinting to victory in Cremona.
