Development Lorenz Van de Wynkele second in opening stage of Olympia's Tour

Lorenz Van de Wynkele finished an impressive second today in the opening stage of the Olympia's Tour.
Race 20 March 2024

As poorly as the race started for Lorenz Van de Wynkele, it ended just as well. Van de Wynkele took a heavy crash in the beginning of the 145-kilometer stage from and to Medemblik. "A few of us went down on a speed bump that wasn't marked," Van de Wynkele said. "I ended up with abrasions, but my bike was completely wrecked. It was really a nasty crash."

Despite the setback, Van de Wynkele was able to continue fueled by adrenaline to ultimately finish second. "About fifteen kilometers from the finish, three of us broke away - me, along with a rider from Metec-Solarwatt and one from Lidl-Trek. Towards the end, a rider from VolkerWessels joined us and immediately attacked. I hesitated for too long and reacted too late. It's a shame because I truly believe the victory was within reach. I can't really hide my disappointment."

However, there are still opportunities in the coming days. "We have more similar stages ahead like today's. Flat and with potential crosswinds. I'm especially hoping for some extra wind, then we can still achieve some great results here."
