In a tight bunch sprint, Caleb Ewan took second place at the GP Monseré today, second race of the Lotto Cycling Cup. After strong team work of Lotto Dstny, Caleb Ewan was brought into a perfect position towards the final straight. The Australian launched a powerful kick and looked set for the win but was eventually narrowly beaten on the line by Gerben Thijssen. Sam Welsford completed the podium in Roeselare.

Initially indicated as the winner, Caleb Ewan had to settle for second place after the photo finish. The Australian reacts disappointed but also takes the positive things from the race.

“Of course, it’s never nice to lose on a photo finish. This is disappointing but we keep on working to get that victory. I’ve been close a couple of times this season and I’m sure that the win is coming soon”, reacts Caleb Ewan.

In the almost 200 kilometres long one-day race GP Monseré, everything was decided in the final local lap. Lotto Dstny protected its sprinter Caleb Ewan and in a technical final with several short cobbled climbs the bunch split. However, it all came back together in the end for a bunch kick.

“I had a really strong team with me today and they did great to keep me out of the danger zone and the wind. Also when the bunch split for a moment, we were always attentive. The guys rode a strong final and dropped me off perfectly towards the line. Unfortunately, I could not reward them with the win but this team work gives us confidence towards the next races, beginning with Milan-Sanremo.”
