Alec Segaert has won the opening time trial of the Giro Next Gen. Segaert, reigning U23 European time trial champion stopped the clock at a top time of 10’45” on the just over 9 kilometres long course. That way, the Lotto Dstny rider moved into the lead of the U23 Giro d’Italia and will start in the iconic maglia rosa tomorrow.

The 20-year-old Belgian made a big goal of the opening time trial and fulfilled his role as a favourite with an impressive performance. “When the Giro course was released, I had my eyes on this time trial. It was a unique chance to grab the pink jersey and I went full for it. The past weeks, I still had two exams, but I still could get the necessary training kilometres on the TT bike in."

"I really had a great feeling and the course suited me well with some parts where you could use your power and an uphill drag at the end. Winning with that clear of a difference, makes it even more beautiful. I think I will sleep well with this maglia rosa. The first goal has been achieved and we will see what the rest of the week will bring”, concludes Alec Segaert.
